To me the Camus quote relates more to the idea that "race" or "gender" or "religion"--blanketly, "difference" as a whole--cannot be experienced by someone who isn't in the shoes of those undergoing the "injustices" of being "different". It doesn't have to be all negative, of course--but for our purposes now, let's go with it.
The Kierkagaard quote seems more to pertain to taking the time to be retrospective and learning from the historic diamonds or coals the past provides us. The past providing context and experience for the present, if you will.
So, I don't see how one precedes another--different concepts, no?
Was this dear Cruel's attempt to go on an intellectual tangent...I like the quote--but I have to mock the sentiment of using it. Sorry, Cru...just tellin' it like you like to. Taste of your own meds and such.

New feature on Sweet/Vicious? I like it.
But I thought it was Kierkegaard who nailed that concept down before Camus:
"Life must be lived ~forward~, but can only be understood ~backward~"

p.s. alert: the Google ad on your site is currently hawking FUR COATS. Ugh. Way bad taste, Google.
Oh wait nevermind, its faux fur. Whew!

No worries mate, I can handle it. Be strict with me baby, no need to spare the lash!
I can see you really just NEED to find opportunities to disagree with me. It doesn't matter particularly about what, does it?
For your own self-respect, I must be the fakir and the charlatan. I get it.
That's all right. :^D
NEED is such a strong word.
You're no fakir.
I come from a culture that strongly supports the idiom: spare the rod and spoil the child.--so strict comes easily to moi.
yeah well they spared it too much on your posterior, to suit me, haha
